No demand for Cherbourg freight service
Tuesday 3rd April 2007, 12:00AM BST.
A FREIGHT service between Cherbourg and Jersey has not started due to a lack of demand.
The Alderney Shipping Group hoped to begin sailing between the Norman port and the Channel Islands at the beginning of last month but not enough customers have come forward. Group managing director Bruno Kay-Mouat said that businesses in the Channel Islands had a tendency to trade with the UK but France was a viable alternative. ‘Goods imported into Jersey, especially food and building materials, could easily come from France,’ he said. ‘At the moment the demand is not there but we hope a service will become viable as more businesses discover the savings that can be made by dealing with France.’
