Agathangelou clinches badminton gold for England juniors

TEENAGER Mariana Agathangelou clinched gold for the England badminton team at the European Junior championships at Saarburcken, Germany last night.
After her team-mates had beaten Denmark 3-1 in the semi-finals, and following Gabrielle White and Chris Adcock’s win in the mixed doubles and Michelle Cheung’s win in her singles match, Agathangelou teamed up with White in the women’s pairs which they won 21-16, 21-15 against Samantha Barning and Patty Stolzenbach.
Despite Jamie Bonsels defeat by Lester Ooey (21-16, 22-20) this 3-1 lead by the England team meant that they had won the tournament outright ahead of the Netherlands and the other six national sides taking part.
Denmark finished third, Russia fourth and Germany fifth.
For left-hander Mariana Agathangelou, pictured right, this was a timely win before she returns to Bath University after the Easter break to continue with her studies.
