Record-breaking finance jobs boom
Wednesday 4th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.
THE number of jobs in Jersey increased by over 1,500 last year – fuelled by a recovery in the finance sector.
Jersey’s banks, law firms and trust companies took on 810 people in 2006 to push the total employed in the industry to a record-breaking 12,660 – almost a quarter of the Island’s workforce. These figures are part of a six-monthly census of the labour market, released yesterday by the States Statistics Unit. At the end of last year 51,780 people were employed in Jersey – 1,540, or three per cent, more than a year earlier. The vast majority of the increase was in the private sector (1,410) and more than half of that rise was in finance.
