Jersey fan trampled by fleeing Man Utd supporters
Thursday 5th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.
A ROOFER from Jersey was ‘glad to be alive’ after being crushed by Man Utd fans as they fled Italian riot police wielding batons during their club’s Champions League clash in Rome last night.
Supporter Martin O’Brien (48) had travelled to the match, which his side lost 2-1, from his St Lawrence home. He said that there was a horrible atmosphere outside the Stadio Olimpico as Man Utd fans were attacked by Roma’s ‘Ultra’ hooligans and some travelling fans were stabbed. During the match the Italian side’s supporters had been pelting the English with bottles and stones. When United’s Paul Scholes was sent off in the 33rd minute Roma fans charged at a plastic barrier which was dividing the fans. Around 100 United supporters reacted and the riot police stormed in, battering anyone who was in their path.
