Jersey kick of festival with flavour of France

Thursday 5th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY’S annual Primary Schools Football Festival goes international this week.

French visitors Mondeville, from Normandy, are competing for the first time in the Oak Group opposing Jersey, Felling and Barking.

Festival organiser Pat Cullinane said: ‘It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and, at last, it will happen.

‘The link has been made through a connection with other age groups and I hope Mondeville enjoy their visit and return again.’ Following Jersey’s recent tour and 4-0 victory against Guernsey, the Jersey lads now face the tough schedule of six games in six days, starting with Mondeville on Sunday and Felling on Monday.

Jersey manager Mark De Luca is assisted by Tony Hoyland and also, later in the week, Rob Cameron.

De Luca said: ‘Our squad have developed well, it was a slow start because we lost several sessions because of wet weather but now they are doing well.

‘Our win in Guernsey was a good bench mark for how we want them to play next week.

The players are now adaptable in the system, they have shown a great willingness to learn and they have done that very quickly.

‘I’m not surprised either really because Tony and Rob are very good coaches, Tony is level three and working towards his A license while Rob is level two.

‘We’re all looking forward to the games, it’s usually a great week of football and an excellent opportunity to make friends with many of the visiting teams.’ Teams will play in groups with matches at the FB Fields, in St Clement, starting at 10.15 and 11.15 am each morning from Sunday through to and including Friday 13 April.

Jersey: Matthew Kaye, Liam Vallois, Glen Horman, Dominic Blampied, Max Vasilion, George Poole, Oliver Terry, Adam Trotter, Stephen Byrne, Jay Giles, Josh Evans, Connor O’Shea, Kendal Perrée, Joe Kirschbaumer, Fraser Barlow.
