Football:Portuguese capitalise on Nomads’ errors
Saturday 7th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.
THE Portuguese Club of Jersey beat Jersey Nomads 3-1 at Springfield on Thursday night to lift their third piece of silverware this season.
Two goals from Manny Fernandes and one by Kamil Adamczuk gave Portuguese a 3-1 win against Jersey Nomads earning them the PW Touzel Memorial Trophy, for the fourth time, to put alongside the JFA’ Willis Cup and Coca-Cola Combination Division II championship won this season.
However, it wasn’t a glittering Portuguese performance, they were short of their best and capitalised on errors from their opponents.
Portuguese, who had Marcio Rodrigues sent off 15 minutes from the end for retaliating violently to Paul Lees’ tackle, took the lead with a gift of a goal.
Goalkeeper Rodney Marais failed to control the ball outside his penalty area and Adamczuk stole in to open the scoring.
Nomads, spurred on by Steve Holt in midfield, spurned a great opportunity when Mark Herridge nodded wide of an unattended goal.
Ged O’Donoghue, denied by a fine save from Marcio Caldeira, equalised soon after with a super half-volley from 18 yards after Jorge Marques’ cross.
Ben Doherty’s touch let him down with just the Portuguese goalkeeper to beat and it proved costly as Manny Fernandes shot Portuguese 2-1 ahead after Marais punched the ball out to him.
Holt and Tony Riley had chances to equalise but it was Fernandes who fired home his second and Portuguese’s third on a near post shortly after they went down to ten men.
