GST threshold on imports may be £100
Thursday 12th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.
THE Goods and Services Tax (GST) could be levied on all imported goods worth over £100, Treasury Minister Terry Le Sueur has confirmed.
The new tax, to be introduced in April next year following next week’s States debate on its details, will mean an extra three per cent on goods sold in Jersey across the board and the States will also be collecting tax on goods imported by individuals and businesses. Previous reports suggested that the threshold would be set at £500. But during the Jersey Chamber of Commerce seminar on GST last week, Steve Lowthorpe, director of GST at the Income Tax Department, said that a threshold had not yet been set and that it could be anywhere between £100 and £500.
