My regret, by death crash sergeant

Thursday 12th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.

THE trial of a police sergeant accused of causing a fatal accident as he answered an emergency call has heard that he was driving at more than twice the recommended speed.

Acting sergeant Mark Hafey (32) is charged with driving without due care and attention on 1 August 2005 on St Clement’s Coast Road. His trial in the Magistrate’s Court has heard that he should have been driving much slower than the 47 to 50 mph he was doing at the time of the crash, and that he would have added only a few seconds to his journey by reducing his speed. The defence are expected to conclude their case today and a verdict could be given this afternoon.
