Football:Ex-Newcastle professional praises Festival

FORMER Newcastle United forward Alan Shoulder has been at the helm of Bishop Auckland in the Primary Schools’ Festival at the FB Fields this week.

And the diminutive striker, who averaged a goal every other game during an 18-month spell at Newcastle, has nothing but praise for the facilities his young players are using or the Festival’s organisation.

‘It’s been absolutely brilliant,’ said the ex-Blyth Spartans player who signed for Newcastle at the age of 26 following a glorious FA Cup run in 1977-78.

‘I knew about the Jersey Festival but this is the first time I’ve been here and it’s wonderful.

‘I got involved in Schools’ soccer because my wife is a teacher; I’ve helped with their training for around 15 years and then started going to the District meetings.

‘I’ve been in charge three years now and the parents of the kids were all keen on coming here so we set about raising £3,000 and here we are.

‘We sent out letters to companies and businesses asking to support the kids; the response was fantastic and the money has been used for flights and accommodation and other things while we are here.

‘The facilities and the organisation in Jersey is fantastic.

My lads have really enjoyed themselves, they’ve had some good games and despite losing three times they have been close games.

‘This Festival differs from others I’ve been to, the emphasis is on fun and enjoyment.

It’s not too competitive and I will certainly recommend it to others to try.

‘We have one player who looks a very good prospect.

Harry Lambard has been consistent in all the games he’s played and I think he could go all the way.

‘He’s already with the Academy at Middlesborough, has a magic left foot, tackles well and has a great attitude.’ Lambard scored Bishop Auckland’s goal from the penalty spot yesterday in a 3-1 defeat by Barking.
