Fur auction boycott

HEALTH Minister Stuart Syvret, who has long argued for a ban on the fur trade, is calling on Islanders to boycott the auction in Jersey of two tiger skin rugs.

One measures 305 cm from end to end and, according to an inscription on the back, was shot by Capt G H Stevenson of the Nepalese Rifles. The other is slightly smaller and measures 272 cm from head to tail. The guide price for the lot, which includes both skins, is between £1,000 and £1,500. Senator Syvret, who presented a 2,500-name petition to the States calling for the importation and sale of animal furs to be banned, urged Islanders not to bid for the tiger skins.
