JEP readers reject Treasury Minister’s GST proposals

JEP readers have overwhelmingly rejected proposals for the new goods and services tax to be added to prices of individual items in stores, according to the results of a phone poll.

Instead, readers have voted by ten to one to back the alternative of the new tax being applied to the total bill at check out, the method most shopkeepers want to see adopted. A total of 413 people voted for the tax to be applied at the till while 40 people supported the proposal for the tax to be added to the price of individual items. The poll was in Friday’s paper and invited readers to vote for the method of applying the tax they would prefer of the two available options.
