Ten-man St Paul’s grab Jeremie place
Monday 16th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.
TEN-MAN St Paul’s grabbed a Jeremie Cup entry for next season after sharing four goals at St Saviour against Rozel Rovers on Saturday.
The Saints, who had defender Shaun Irving sent off early on after two yellow cards, went ahead through Craig Leitch only for Scott Healey to equalise from a penalty kick condeded by Irving.
St Paul’s missed several good opportunities and Rozel punished them with Andy McCabe nodding the visitors ahead, after intelligent play by Stuart Truscott, only for Leitch to make it 2-2 from an acute angle.
St Paul’s assistant manager Martin Cassidy said: ‘Two players were outstanding for me, Jordan Docherty and Lee Bradshaw.
They are two players I believe the Island should not be leaving behind for Island Games because they were both excellent.
‘Jordan has had an excellent season for us and he is the division’s most improved player for me.
Lee has played just two games in 20 months because of a knee injury and it doesn’t look as if he’s been away.
‘I thought he may have struggled with his pace but he has not and his positional sense and awareness is very good.
He and Stuart André play well together, they are both confident on the ball and that allows us to play football from the back.’ Rozel’s hopes of Jeremie Cup qualification have now ended, although they joined Trinity on goal-difference in joint fifth place in Coca-Cola Combination Division I, Trinity, who host First Tower tomorrow night in the division’s final match, take the final place.
St Peter finished third in Division I Reserves, on goal-difference behind First Tower, after they defeated champions Grouville 2-1 at St Peter.
Darren Freeman and junior Scott Walsh netted for the winners and Glen Rayner for the losers.
Tower took second spot while condemning Sporting Academics to Division II Reserves football next season following a 1-0 victory over the Accies at La Hague Manor.
Neil Langdon scored the only goal.
Junior David Streets scored the only goal at the Hockey Club securing St Brelade a 1-0 success against Jersey Wanderers.
Relegated Trinity scratched to Rozel Rovers shortly before kick-off after being unable to raise a side.
St Paul’s finished above St Clement to take the runners-up spot and gain promotion from Division II Reserves.
Junior Ollie Gallagher scored a hat-trick to take his tally to eight for St Paul’s in their last two games.
St Paul’s’ other goals in an 8-0 win against St John at St Saviour were scored by Paul McGinness, Fabio De Andrade, Glen Durrans and junior Declan Sowney.
Paul Tumelty and Jason Kelly were on target in St Clement’s 2-0 home win against St Martin/SCF.
Champions St Ouen ended their season with a 5-0 win at Les Quennevais against Beeches Old Boys.
Shane Carré notched a brace and Ben Burton, Jon Evans and Scott Samson singles.
Agostino Gouveia and Nelson Aviero netted for Portuguese Club in a 2-1 success over Jersey Nomads at Les Quennevais where Stuart Cunnington replied.
Magpies returned 8-1 victors from St Lawrence where Mike Donoghue netted for the hosts and Tony Simao (three), Matt Pamplin (two), Gary Cadwallader, Dean Hughes and Adam Gavin for the visitors.
Just two clubs can now win the Division C title, Grouville, who lead three clubs by one point, and St Peter.
Stewart Daynes, Steve Ashton, Nick Walmsley, Danny Hughes and Chris Smith were on target in leaders Grouville’s 5-0 win away to St Ouen.
St Peter kept pace following a 6-1 win at St Clement where Phil Kendall (two), Roley McMichael, Andy Coleman, Mark Nicole and Leo Da Silva registered for St Peter and Matt Rawlings for St Clement.
Tony Salaun hit a hat-trick and Scott Young and Paul Sims singles as Wanderers won 5-2 at Le Couvent against Rozel Rovers.
Tony Amorin and Colin Roworth netted for the Rovers.
