Netball:Jersey promoted as play-off is scrapped
Tuesday 17th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY’S top netball team, J United, will play in the South-West’s Premier League next season as their expected play-off for promotion has been scrapped.
It was thought that, after remaining unbeaten to win the South-West’s South League by a comfortable eight points, they would have to play the winner of the South-West’s North League to gain entry into the higher league but coach Maureen Cox this week heard the news that those plans have been scrapped.
‘I think because both the winners of the north division and Jersey won their leagues so convincingly they decided to promote us both rather than have a play-off,’ said Cox, who offered congratulations to all those involved in the success.
‘Once again I think netball has shown the standard that can be reached with commitment and dedication from coaches, players, umpires and managers.
‘This does not come without a lot of hard work and over the years we have built up a marvellous network of volunteers to whom I send my personal thanks.
‘There is the continuing question of travel costs and the fact that we would like Jersey to be our home fixture with other teams having to travel to the Island.
This would not only help cut the costs but would provide the Island with some excellent games to watch.
‘We are in negotiations with Netball South West to see what can be done as we believe there will be 18 games to play over the season which would mean travelling nearly every week which is not practical.
‘Sponsorship for this promotion would be brilliant and if there is any corporate or other sponsor out there that would like to discuss what we can offer and the sort of finances we are looking at please contact either myself or any other member of the association.’ The Jersey Jollies Netball League starts again on Thursday with a new time and venue.
The friendly evenings will begin at 7 pm at Haute Vallée School for the next ten weeks, excluding half term.
