Town’s grand design

CARS will be pushed out of the town centre under a 20-year blueprint for St Helier published today.

The long-awaited £240,000 Edaw report sets out a bold planning agenda to accommodate a growing finance industry and to encourage Islanders to live in town by providing flats between the bottom and top ends of the housing market. The Town Plan also sets out to link up public spaces, and shift cars out of the town centre by positioning car parks on the fringes of the town, pedestrianising streets, and simplifying the ring-road. It states that where existing office accommodation is abandoned as businesses migrate to the waterfront, alternative uses, including residential and retail, should be considered on the sites.
