Banks fee demands not backed by the law

Wednesday 18th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.

BANKS are still demanding up to £5 per sheet for back-dated bank statements even though the law states clearly that an entire six-year set should cost just £10.

Fair Play today tells the story of two readers who are trying to reclaim unfair bank charges going back half a dozen years. The consumer team has, over the past few weeks, given advice to Islanders about how to go about recouping their cash. That advice has included printing two letters that can be used as templates and which were drafted by John Avery, one of the first Islanders to successfully reclaim charges totalling thousands of pounds. The two readers featured on today’s Fair Play page were both told that they would be charged £5 a sheet for back-dated statements up to a maximum fee of £200. The consumer team took up both their cases and have successfully argued with Lloyds and Barclays that they were wrong to ask for the fee.
