Harbour strike hits handling of freight

Wednesday 18th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.

THE loading of freight ground to a halt at the Harbour today because of a 24-hour strike by States workers.

Over 40 manual workers, who are members of the Transport and General Workers Union, formed picket lines at the Elizabeth Harbour and New North Quay to protest over a new employment contract, which they say has been imposed upon them without negotiation. The new contracts follow the workers’ move last May from Jersey Harbours to Transport and Technical Services. The workers were supported today by other union members at the Harbour, including employees of Ferryspeed, Huelin-Renouf and Troy’s, which meant that no freight was due to be landed or loaded in Jersey today.
