Sainsbury contract for grower of red peppers
Wednesday 18th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.
A JERSEY grower has won a contract to supply around 200,000 red peppers to the giant Sainsbury supermarket chain.
GJ Growers of Vinchelez, run by Graham Le Lay and his son, Mark, grew some extra-sweet Ramiro peppers as a trial for Sainsbury’s last year and they liked them so much that they awarded the Island company a contract to supply 100,000 packets of two peppers between now and November.
They started shipping them to the UK on Monday.
The Ramiro is a long, sweet red pepper which is being grown under licence for the first time in Jersey.
It is widely acknowledged to be the best variety, both for taste and texture.
