Harbour strike over but the dispute rumbles on

THE Harbour was back to normal this morning after yesterday’s strike by States workers, but their dispute remains unresolved.
Freight ships that had been forced to depart with their cargo still unloaded returned to the Island this morning to resume their normal schedules. But the dispute that prompted picket lines to form at the Harbour continues. Transport and General Workers Union official Nick Corbel said: ‘Yesterday we put forward proposals to set up a working party at the level of the Manual Workers’ Joint Council but this was rejected by the employer. ‘They are insisting that the workers agree to move into new workshops as a pre-condition but we feel that would take away our bargaining power.’
