Reform debate delayed – again

AFTER a long and complicated consultation exercise, Privileges and Procedures have effectively abandoned the composition debate and backed another States Member’s proposal lodged six months ago.

The committee have thrown their weight behind Senator Ben Shenton’s proposals to axe four Senators seats and increase the term of office from three to four years. Over the last year the committee have run two Mori polls, a series of meetings, leaflets to every household and a two-day States ‘in-committee’ debate to try to find a solution to the composition debate that the States have been wrestling with since the publication of the Clothier Report in December 2000.
