Football:Six new Muratti men in squad to face Guernsey

Friday 20th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY’S men’s football squads have been announced for the Cimandis Muratti and the NatWest Island Games and new team manager Dave Kennedy is confident they can pull in some good results.

The squad to face Guernsey next month contains no fewer than six players uncapped at Muratti level: James Scott, Craig Northedge, Russell Le Feuvre, Ashley Dodd, Chris Conning, Andrew Bird and Paul Aitken.

He said: ‘Obviously some players are disappointed not to have made it but I’m very pleased with both squads – all the players have had very good seasons for their respective clubs.

‘There are a couple of new caps in both teams and there was also a number of the Muratti squad who couldn’t travel to Rhodes, because of work commitments.

However, 27 players made themselves available to go so it was a tough decision to finalise the 20 that will travel to Rhodes and unless there are any injuries this is the final squad.’ ‘Looking at the Muratti squad I think we’ve got a good mixture of youth and experience and we’ve got every reason to be confident – I’m sure the pressure will be on Guernsey to satisfy the home crowd.’ ‘As a player I always used to enjoy playing in the big games and it’s important to know how to enjoy games like this and be relaxed on the day which we will try to make sure we do.

‘There are also one or two things we’ve been working on in training so we already know how we are going to play.

I’ve been speaking to Pat Brennan and we’ve come up with a few ideas – with how Guernsey will play and how we’ll be trying to limit their play and create chances.’ Kennedy explained that both squads will come together for training next week so that they can have the match practice to work on various formations: ‘For the ones who have made it I’ve already told them the hard work starts next Tuesday,’ he added.

‘The reason I took the job on was to have the opportunity to take the team into competitions having chosen the teams .

Having done that I’m looking forward to it.’ Squad for Rhodes: Stuart André (St Paul’s, captain), Paul Aitken (Jersey Scottish), Chris Andrews (Jersey Wanderers), Andrew Bird (St Paul’s), John Beatson (Trinity), Jack Cannon (St Peter), Chris Conning (St Peter), Kevan Crowell (St Peter), Ross Crick (Jersey Scottish), Ashley Dodd (Trinity), Alex Jeffries (Grouville), Craig Leitch (St Paul’s), Dave Le Roux (Trinity), Russell Le Feuvre (Grouville), James O’Haire (Rozel Rovers), Joel Speight (St Peter), Jimmy Styles (Trinity), James Scott (Jersey Scottish), Peter Vincenti (St Peter), Liam Walshe (Grouville).
