Numbers crisis for honorary police

THE ranks of St Helier’s honorary force are now so depleted that there are not enough officers to cover major Island events including Liberation Day, the parish chef de police has revealed.
Centenier David Christie said that recruitment problems were ‘rapidly reaching crisis point’. The force’s annual report, which was published this week, shows that during 2006 just 26 of the 52 posts in the force were filled. Mr Christie said: ‘We have a big problem with recruitment. We have 11 Centeniers whose time is more than committed to doing parish hall inquiries and Magistrate’s Court cases.
