Hockey:RWB roar back to beat Cubs
Monday 23rd April 2007, 12:00AM BST.
RWB picked up their fourth hockey trophy of the season on Saturday as they roared back to beat Guernsey’s Cubs 7-2 to retain the honours in this year’s ladies’ hockey Upton.
The Jersey side certainly didn’t have it all their way as they were two goals down after only four minutes! However, they soon pulled together and replied impressively to ensure they made it a clean sweep of hockey trophies.
It was Cubs’ Debbie Hunter whose flick in the first minute gave the Sarnians the lead at Les Quennevais.
Ellie Knowelden then put the visitors even further ahead following a short corner.
But Jersey’s champions soon sparked into life.
Captain Becky Darts picked up a Cubs’ clearance which enabled her to turn and shoot on the edge of the D and start the comeback.
Soon afterwards RWB’s vice captain Sally MacDowall levelled as her neat strike from close range went flying into the goal.
MacDowall and Darts both scored again to leave RWB in a comfortable position at half-time.
A superb hat-trick from Chrissie Hefford in the second half secured the win.
Coach Kevin Bacon was surprised to see his team 2-0 down so early on in the match after playing out the exact same scenario in a recent practice match: ‘It didn’t work as well in the practice match as it did today,’ he commented.
‘I was always confident we would come back though as we’ve had to do it a couple of times this season and the team showed great character.
It’s been a great season and it’s superb to win four out of four in my first season with RWB.’ Darts, who played with a broken finger, added: ‘I’m really chuffed to win – it’s been a fantastic season.
‘We’ve had a dedicated coach who has been brilliant, great support from the sidelines that’s been really good for us, and we’ve also integrated some new players into the team who have stepped up to the challenge.
‘We haven’t got a huge squad, we have 16 registered, and so there’s been great commitment and we’ve really come together as a team.’ Meanwhile Cubs’ coach Ali Le Tocq praised RWB’s performance: ‘I think the best team won at the end of the day,’ she said.
‘We were missing several key players, mainly from the attack, but the team played really well and to go 2-0 up after only four minutes was great.
‘Obviously there is disappointment at not winning the treble but the game was played in a really good spirit and it was a good game of hockey.’ RWB are sponsored by MacInvest Financial Services.
