Leonis ABC trio lift titles in Weymouth
Monday 23rd April 2007, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY’s young boxers fared well in the Southern Area Senior Novice championships in Weymouth on Saturday, winning four of their five bouts.
In a straight final Leonis lightweight Ryan Powell, moving up in weight, won the B Class title against the talented Richard Grigg of Bideford, a member of the Western County squad.
Griggs’ sharp punching and good footwork were a problem early on, but Powell got in good shots to the head and body.
It was still close at the end of the second, but Powell started to close Grigg down and landed heavy rights and left hooks to his body that really hurt the Bideford man.
It was a good performance from Powell and he fully deserved his unnanimous points victory.
Leonis team-mate Boyd Munroe boxed twice, forcing Alexander Hoskins of Devonport to retired with a broken jaw in the second round, before facing Bryan Heywood of Barnstable in the final.
Solid lefts and rights from the Jersey lad stopped the Cornish boxer’s advances and by the final round Heywood had to take two standing eight counts.
Munroe’s unanimous victory was a wide one indeed.
Pisces ABC’s rising star Joe Muscat advanced to the Class A final with a storming victory over Chris Harris from Dorchester, who was saved from further punishment by the referee after just 20 seconds.
Muscat also performed well in the final against Faheem Khan of Devonport, the teenager landing straight rights against the strong southpaw.
He was, indeed, cruising to victory when in the last 30 seconds of the third round he was caught by a powerful left counterpunch that forced the referee to stop the contest.
All three Leonis boxers, backed by Minerva Financial Service, travel to Bournemouth on Saturday for the Western Counties Novice finals.
Pisces’ Ryan Nicoll has received another bye to the next round.
Dave Thomspon cornered for the Leonis boys, with Pisces’ head coach looking after Joe Muscat.
