Shake-up in line for Tourism?

PLANS are in hand to turn Jersey Tourism into a private/public partnership by January 2009.

Instead of being a States-run operation, as it is now, the tourism office will be structured like a private company with a board of directors and a chief executive. The States’ tourism budget, currently up to £7 million per annum, will be given over to the new company. But it is not yet clear what will happen to the 20 or so staff who are working for Jersey Tourism within the Economic Development department. The idea, mooted by the Jersey Hospitality Association two years ago, is that the Island’s tourism industry should aim to mirror the success achieved by Jersey Finance Ltd in marketing and representing the finance industry. However, the JHA would continue to have an independent role as a trade association.
