Harbour walkout ‘was the only option’

THE union representing the workers whose 24-hour walkout closed St Helier harbour to freight last week says that the men had no alternative but to go on strike.

In a letter to all States Members sent out yesterday, the Transport and General Workers Union says that a six-point plan drafted to resolve the dispute was rejected last week by the employer. ‘It appears that they are in no mood to negotiate,’ says Transport Union official Nick Corbel in the letter to politicians. He also argues that the employer side ‘was not listening and not willing to enter into negotiations’ with the engineering workers.
