Police pay tribute to bravery of rape victim

THE bravery of the rape victim who was attacked in Minden Place helped to jail her attacker, according to the police.

The 27-year-old woman tried to fight off the man who followed her into the car park and punched and throttled her while he was raping her. Madeiran Antonio Joao Fernandes Correia (33) was sentenced to eight years in prison by the Royal Court yesterday for the rape. He will be deported when he is released from La Moye. The victim immediately complained to police and has shown remarkable strength throughout the investigation. Det insp Chris Beechey said: ‘I would like to commend the bravery of the victim. She has assisted the police during all aspects of the inquiry, from her early complaint to the investigation and throughout the trial.
