Friday 27th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.
A JERSEY resident on an environmental project in Borneo was killed in a road crash this week.
Toby Eaton-Baudains (29), a tree surgeon, was returning from work at an orang-utan sanctuary in Malaysia on Monday when the van he was travelling in hit a lorry parked at the side of the road. Mr Eaton-Baudains was doing voluntary work as a project manager for the youth development charity Raleigh International when he and nine others were involved in the crash. The driver swerved to avoid the lorry but was unable to avoid impact. Raleigh International said that he died from his injuries sustained as he returned from the Sepilok orang-utan sanctuary to the project site at Batu Puteh. Two other project volunteers were also hospitalised as a result of the crash. Mr Eaton-Baudains was born in Yorkshire but lived in St Peter with his partner of four years Emily Walmsley. His father, Tom Eaton, said: ‘He was an extremely positive, motivational and inspirational man and that is why he was in Borneo. It is a huge tragedy. We are very proud of him. He was doing exactly what he wanted to be doing when he was killed.’
