Big Brother has his eye on St John

Saturday 28th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.

BIG Brother could be branching out – to the peaceful rural parish of St John.

Deputy Andrew Lewis has called for CCTV to be installed in the village to target vandals and those who drop litter and park illegally. There have been ‘at least four incidents’ this year, he says. He says the parish’s honorary police support the idea. It will cost between £15,000 and £20,000 and he plans to apply for a community safety grant from the States. If that is not received ratepayers will be asked if they want to pay for the cameras. The Assistant Home Affairs Minister said: ‘I am looking into the feasibility of CCTV cameras in the precinct as a deterrent to those who are not only causing damage to some businesses, but also to target perpetrators of litter-dropping and illegal parking. ‘I do not view this in any way as a Big Brother stance, but a measure to give better protection to the businesses and the public using these services.’
