Young Wanderers seek footballing treble

Saturday 28th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY Wanderers bid to keep the John Leatt Memorial Trophy in Jersey hands as they face Guernsey Northerners in the under-16 inter-insular at Springfield this afternoon.

Wanderers completed a Jersey Telecom Junior League Division I league and Eric Amy Cup double losing just once this season, in the final game.

Joint manager John Hannah, who is assisted by Gary Bowman, said: ‘The boys have had a tremendous season and hopefully that will continue against North.

‘They have been successful as a squad because they’ve been able to focus hard during game – and at training – it has has really paid off.

‘There are more important things in football than an unbeaten record, the younger ones in the age group have had a lot of involvement too and that is important because we want them all to stay with the club.

‘We know North have good players and we will assess things as we go along.

We have a game plan, too, and hopefully all the boys will give a good account of themselves.’ North, who have Guernsey’s Junior Muratti hat-trick hero Matt Loaring in their squad, won Guernsey’s Youth Two League with 11 wins and one draw in their twelve games.

Incredibly North have a goal-difference of plus-73 in the division.

They have won another cup while on Monday they were beaten 3-2 by Vale Rec, who finished three points behind them in their league.

Kick-off at Springfield this afternoon is at 3 pm.
