Motorsport:Day of extremes for Currie at Cadwell
Wednesday 2nd May 2007, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY rider Rob Currie won his first race in the BMCRC Forza Xtreme Rookie Class motorcycle championships at Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire.
Astride his Jersey Telecom R1, Currie powered his way through the pack over the technical circuit to claim his first Rookie win.
‘I got off the line well and overtook five riders by the end of the first lap, then Rookie championship leader Alan Smith on lap three.
I am thrilled,’ said Currie who also gained two championship points in the main series.
But he suffered another extreme of motor sport in the afternoon.
With a higher grid position and a fast start he was again Rookie leader after two laps.
But on the last lap, riding hard to overtake a pack of four riders, he accelerated too early out of a corner, causing the bike to slide and was thrown over the high side at 80 mph.
Not enough spare bike parts meant a battered, but not broken, Currie could not race the next day.
But Currie was content with his first win and improving his best lap time by five seconds.
Not to mention valuable experience, both bad and good! Currie, sponsored by Jersey Telecom, is confident his bike will be ready to race at Brands Hatch on 12 and 13 May.
