Prison for man who court says ‘wasted his last chance’
Saturday 1st September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
A MAN with over 30 convictions comprising 309 offences for larceny, drugs and illegal driving is in prison today after ‘wasting’ his last chance.
Martin John Wakeling (33) was jailed for a total of two years and three months by the Royal Court yesterday. He had been spared custody and sentenced to probation after becoming involved in importing heroin last year. In December, however, he breached the terms of his probation, when he was caught with stolen mobile phone top-up cards worth £200. In the Royal Court yesterday, Crown Advocate Conrad Yates said that Wakeling was also stopped in Benest’s Supermarket in November as he attempted to steal a bottle of vodka. At a parish hall inquiry the Centenier decided there was insufficient evidence to charge him, and although the case was reviewed by the Attorney-General, who did bring charges, they were dismissed yesterday by the court. Crown Advocate Yates said that Wakeling was subsequently caught in January driving a car without a full licence and insurance. Wakeling’s defence lawyer, Advocate Katriona Fogarty, said he was dealing with drug addiction and had indeed committed similar offences, but she asked the court to remember that these new offences were not drug-related.
