Chicken farm saved by smoke detector
Monday 3rd September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
A FIRE in a poultry shed killed several chickens this morning.
The Fire Service, who attended the incident at Le Bienvenue Farm on St Lawrence main road just before 1 am, suspect that an electrical fault started the blaze. Steven Carter, of St Lawrence Growers Limited, said that it was not clear how many of the 6,000 birds at the farm were killed, but did not think it was many. The birds at the farm are divided into three sheds, only one of which was affected by the fire. ‘We have probably lost a few chickens through asphyxiation, but there was no major damage to the building because it was contained quite quickly, fortunately,’ said Mr Carter.
