Cigarette put in bin causes town fire
Monday 3rd September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
A FIRE in a top flat in Bond Street on Friday night has prompted the Fire Service to warn of the dangers of inadequate disposal of cigarettes in waste paper bins.
Firefighters were called to the flat in Bond Street at around 11.10 pm after the occupier had earlier emptied an ashtray into a waste paper bin, which ignited and set fire to the surrounding area. After hearing crackling, the 59-year-old man discovered the fire in an upper storage area, and, after calling the Fire Service, tried to put the fire out – but was forced back by the heat and smoke. The man suffered from some smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene by paramedics but not taken to hospital.
