THE expected tight race for the Coca-Cola Division I championship is already begining to materialise.
Only the inactive St Paul’s have a 100 per cent record to date – and they’ve only played the once!
A thumping 6-0 home victory for St Peter over Rozel Rovers puts them out in front, but only on goal difference from champions Jersey Scottish and Portuguese Club who also enjoyed excellent victories on Saturday.
St Peter, fresh from winning the Charity Cup in midweek, were 5-0 up by half-time at home to a shell-shocked Rozel, who had won their opening game.
St Peter’s goals rained in from Bradley Russell (twice), Jack Cannon, Chris Conning, Marco Viera and James Lynch.
A few long goal-kicks away at La Hague, visiting Jersey Scottish were recording an only slightly less impressive win, 5-1, over First Tower United.
The experienced Ross Crick and Scott Devlin scored for the champions, with youngsters Luke Watson, Callum Brennan and Jack Boyle also finding the net.
Tower replied with a penalty from Jody MacCarthy.
Portuguese Club won a seven-goal affair against Grouville at Le Boulivot.
The hosts, still to get off the mark this term despite having finished runners up last season, scored through Stewart Daynes and Island player Liam Walshe, the latter hitting the net twice, once from the spot.
But José-Manuel Vieira, Bruno Sousa, Richard Russell and John Rutter maintained the promoted visitors’ excellent start to the campaign.
Jersey Nomads opened their Division II campaign with a 4-0 away victory over St Lawrence, Steve Holt scoring twice with Carl Winn and Ged O’Donoghue also netting.
Rozel Rovers are second to St Ouen in Division II Reserves after a 3-2 away win over St Brelade, with Russell Byrne and Ricky Figueira on target for the hosts.
St Paul’s recorded their first win of the league campaign with a 5-1 win over First Tower.
Joe Burleigh, Kenneth Chalk, Paul McGinness and David Watson scored for Saints, with Wayne Shales replying for Tower.
Christian Guy and Stephen Prue were on target for St Lawrence in a 2-2 draw away to St John in Division II Reserves.
Jakub Szczesniar and a St Lawrence defender recorded the scores for the home side.
In the only Division C match Rozel hit five goals to better three from St Ouen.
Rozel’s Sean Anderton scored twice, with Colin Roworth, Andy Hill and Lee Kent also chipping in.
Dave Evans, Alan Edwards (penalty) and Phil Faulkner replied for St Ouen.
