In a class of her own

A FORMER teacher celebrated her 100th birthday at the weekend.

Gwendoline Bridge marked the turn of a century on Saturday at Hotel L’Horizon, where she was joined by 40 people for afternoon tea. Taking part in the celebrations were some very special guests: seven of Mrs Bridge’s relations flew in from Brazil to mark the occasion and the Lieutenant-Governor, Lieutenant-General Andrew Ridgway, and Mrs Ridgway also came along, armed with birthday greetings from the Queen. ‘There are a lot of us reaching 100 now,’ said Mrs Bridge. ‘I expect the Queen must be very busy.’ Mrs Bridge was born in London and came to Jersey aged 19 as a lithographic artist for Axon and Harrison. She went on to become an artist at Brown’s Fashion House, producing the weekly advertisements for the Evening Post. Mrs Bridge met her future husband, Pat, a schoolmaster at the Jersey Modern School, at a party at Sion House in Longueville.
