Greechans add CI bowls titles

Tuesday 4th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY won both Le Quesne trophy bowls inter-insulars on Saturday in Guernsey – and then won eight out of 11 finals to take the overall team trophy in Sunday’s Channel Islands bowls finals.

It was a close call for the men’s team on Saturday as they were 28 shots behind after ten ends, but they bounced back to win by three shots and retain the trophy for the 11th year.

The ladies’ team made lighter work of things, winning four out of six rinks to take the honours by 32 shots.

Playing in perfect conditions the following day at Vale Rec, husband and wife Thomas and Lyndsey Greechan did the double again to become CI singles champions.

Lyndsey, playing Pauline Leadbeater, was behind 8-7 on the eighth end before picking up a four on the next; and with Leadbeater unable to score again, Lyndsey won the game 21-8.

Thomas beat Don Batiste for his title, seeming in control throughout after leading from the start.

At 16-12 on the 19th end Greechan went on to pick up two singles and a treble to win the game 21-12.

Jersey also won the under-25s singles as Jamie MacDonald beat Matt Le Berr in a thrilling encounter.

All square at 20-20, MacDonald was holding game with a bowl almost touching the jack when Le Berr played a great bowl.

He moved the wood but pushed the jack to one of the Jerseyman’s back bowls handing MacDonald the game 21-20.

In the ladies’ seniors, at 18-7 after 13 ends, Liz Cole seemed to be in a comfortable position against Pauline Leadbeater before the Sarnian closed the gap to just two points.

Cole was therefore relieved to pick up two singles to win the game 21-17.

In the men’s seniors Cyril Renouf kept the lead after the fourth end to beat Ricky Nash 21-11.

The Jersey ladies’ pairs winners were unable to compete but the men’s pair Alan Cadoret and Didier Le Falher had a great start, picking up a five in the first end.

However, their opponents, Gary Pitchou and Dave Lucas, pulled it back to seven-all on the eighth end and with the Jersey duo struggling with a tricky rink the Guernsey pair won 20-10.

Mixed pair Lorraine and Tim Murphy earned Jersey another win as they beat Dan and Gwen De La Mare 16-14.

Both triples teams were also successful with good wins.

Cyril Renouf’s team of Alan Shaw and John Rowcliffe were 12-0 ahead after eight ends and they beat Guernsey 23-5.

Sue Dingle, Jenny Allo and Gaynor Thomas lost the first end but after that took control and beat Alison Merrien, Sally Paul and Michelle Le Clercq 22-9.

Both fours sides had a disappointing day as the ladies team of Karina Bisson, Gean O’Neil, Chris Grimes and Carol Allen lost 21-14.

The men’s team of Greg Davies, Lawrence De Gruchy (sub for Peter Horn), Ross Davis and Maurice Fox played some great bowls to be ahead 10-5 after ten ends.

However, after the 13th end it was 13-10 to the strong Guernsey team of Matt Le Berr, Gary Pitchou, Garry Collins and Lenny Le Berr and they dropped a seven to win 20-12.
