Syvret appoints new chairman for child protection
Tuesday 4th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
HEALTH Minister Stuart Syvret has replaced sacked child protection chairman Iris Le Feuvre.
Senator Syvret – who faces a vote of no confidence in the States next Tuesday – has appointed a UK professor to head the Jersey Child Protection Committee (JCPC), which co-ordinates child protection work in the Island. Professor June Thoburn will chair the body from the UK, visiting Jersey for two to three days each month for the next 12 months. She has published work on child protection and fostering issues and has been given an initial one-year contract, at the end of which she will publish a report with recommendations for any improvements necessary. ‘Suffice it to say that she is an outstanding and internationally renowned professional who will bring independence, a fresh perspective and a degree of expert rigour to the task of chairing the JCPC,’ said Senator Syvret, whose sacking of Mrs Le Feuvre was part of the chain of events leading to next week’s dismissal vote.
