New child protection chairman to be paid

A CHILD welfare expert from the UK will be paid £8,000 for taking on the job of child protection chairman.

Professor June Thoburn, who was appointed head of the Jersey Child Protection Committee by the Health Minister this week, will carry out a report into the state of child welfare in Jersey over the next 12 months. She replaces former honorary chairman Iris Le Feuvre who was sacked by Senator Syvret after writing a letter calling for his resignation. Senator Syvret said today that Professor Thoburn, who he described as a world-renowned specialist in child welfare, was a bargain at £8,000 and anyone who cares about children in the Island should welcome it. ‘It’s actually very cheap because she was genuinely interested in Jersey and was willing to take it up,’ he said.
