Leader of attack is sent to prison
Monday 10th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
THE teenage ringleader of a horrific gang attack on an man in front of his screaming partner and children has been jailed for 14 months.
Two others who kicked and beat the man as he lay helpless in the road have been sentenced to 180 hours and 150 hours community service. The Deputy Bailiff, Michael Birt, told Jamie Edward Chapman (18) that as a result of his behaviour: ‘Only a custodial sentence will do’. He agreed with the observations of Crown Advocate Conrad Yates, who said: ‘A mob of drunken youths launching an attack on an innocent victim amounts to a particularly serious affray. This type of offence must not only be punished, but it must be firmly deterred by the courts with the most serious form of punishment, which in this case is youth detention.’
