BADMINTON: Elizabeth Cann’s good early season form continues as she reached the final of the Yonex Belgium International Badminton Championships yesterday.
Cann, the second seed, made it through to the title decider without dropping a set but in the final faced top seed Laura Griga, who had dismissed Jersey’s Solenn Pasturel 21-15, 21-9 in the first round, and lost to the Ukrainian 21-15, 16-21, 21-18.
Cann turned the tables on Switzerland’s No 4 seed Jeanine Cicognini, having lost to her last time out, by recording a 21-16, 23-21 victory in the semi-finals.
In the same competition, Mariana Agathangelou and women’s doubles partner Gaby White reached the semi-final, having earlier dismissed the fourth seeds from Sweden 21-15, 21-17, but lost to England’s Sarah Bok and Jenny Wallwork 21-19, 21-9.
Agathangelou also made it to the second round of the mixed doubles, with partner Dean George, but lost to England pair Nathalie Munt and Robert Adcock 23-21, 21-19.
ATHLETICS – Inter-insular: IN a weekend of high-class athletics in the State Street Inter-Insular, Jersey finally edged ahead of Guernsey late on day two to retain the Combined Trophy.
Guernsey however, regained the coveted senior men’s Montague Burton Trophy with their tenth win in 11 years.
Coote retains title – Jersey Spartan AC’s Jon Coote retained his title in the 20th Alderney Half-Marathon, winning in 1 hr 24 min 56 sec.
Hull’s Trevor Misson was second in the two-lap course of the island in 1.30.16, with Alderney’s Nikki Neal taking third and first lady honours in 1.30.29.
TRIATHLON – Novices tri it out: Mark Nicol won the Ogier Jersey Novice Triathlon yesterday, crossing the line in 49.20 min.
Luke Burton was second in 55.23 and Ryan Lewis third in 56.51.
Liz Murfin won the ladies’ race in 59.30, Sam Horsfall was second in 1.00.00 hour and Gabby Hawson third in 1.01.10.
MOTORSPORT – Dingle on podium: Bruce Dingle was third in both the final of the 450cc and the Open class at the British NORA Supermoto Championship at the Blyton Raceway track in Lincolnshire.
Two-day event: THE Deans Yamaha overall Motocross champion at the JMCLCC’s two-day Sorel event was UK rider Paul Shires.
Man of the Meet was veteran Denis Le Breton after a stunning display to come second in the MX1 class.
Other class winners included Damian Boyer, Dan Moon, Michael Veloso, Jack Galloway, Jack Timms and Liam Wright.
Beaumont trial: THE results of the Jersey Classic and Modern Trials Club’s trial held at Beaumont yesterday were: A Route: Lee Rogan; B Route: Oliver du Feu; Pre-65 Premier: Graham du Feu; C Route: Ian Tracey; Twin Shock: Andy Jeanne; Pre-65: Archie du Feu; Junior A: Chris Vibert; Junior B: Oliver Laurens; Junior Small Wheel: Kealon Bisson.
HOCKEY – Jersey make finals: The Island ladies’ and men’s hockey teams made it to the finals of the Barclays Wealth Four-Islands tournament, but both lost to hosts Isle of Man.
The ladies lost 2-0 and the men lost a thriller 3-2, Stuart Ramskill and Peter Miller netting the goals.
CYCLING – Mayman uncatchable: CCC’s Dave Mayman won the Jersey Cycling Association’s hill climb yesterday in 2 min 17 sec, also taking the first veteran prize at Bouley Bay.
The first five riders were only separated by 12 seconds, with Ali Cann taking second (first senior) and Mike Harris third.
John du Feu was fourth and Robert Coutanche was fifth and top junior.
BEACH VOLLEYBALL – Milk Shot Twos: Milk Shots (Krzystof Piaseczny and Paul Gartshore) beat Marks and Spencer (Przemek Wozniwski and Marcin Migas) 2-0 to win the men’s final of the Milk Shot Twos beach volleyball tournament at the Gunsite.
Milk Shot Seagals (Maggie Jurajda and Jo Dodsley) beat Spring Beans (Sally Hall and Yvonne Eggers) 2-0 to win the ladies’ final.
SNOOKER – Home defeats: THE JBSA snooker team have lost their first two matches at the Home Internationals in Prestatyn.
They lost to the Republic of Ireland 12-6 on Saturday and to a Pontin’s International team 15-3 yesterday.
SHOOTING – Top shot shared: Mark Andrews, winner of Class AA, and Richard Le Brun, winner of Class A, tied for the High Gun honours in Lecq Clay Target Club’s 100 Bird Sporting yesterday with 85 ex 100.
Other results: A: 2, Ernie Le Brun and Dave Le Rendu 82.
AA: 2, Ashley Le Sech 81; B: 1, Clive Green 84; 2, Chris Settle 82; 3, Paul Lister and Graham Pallot 78; C: 1, Dean Lawrence 57; 2, Alan Patterson 56; 3, Hugh Aitken 52.

GOLF – Blinding wins: Glen Arnett (25) and Andy MacDonald (18) won the Les Ormes GC September Blind Partners Stableford yesterday with 73 points.
John O’Connell (25) and Glen George (19) were second on 71 and Billy Moir (13) and S Hainsworth third on 69.
Sommerville success: Yesterday’s St Clement GC September monthly medal was won by Sommerville Telfer (16hcp) with a net 57.
Second was Brian Duffy II (17) with a net 58.
Beeley tops field: Ian Beeley (12hcp) won the Demi Golf Society’s Le Bourg Shield Stableford on Saturday with 39 points.
Craig Beeley (7) was second on 39 and Ray Pearce (12) third on 38.
Carey on form: Dave Carey (5) won the Jersey Western Golf Club’s RCD Laffoley Medal yesterday with a net 70.
Andre Bell (6) was second with a net 70 and third was Graham Bisson (13), also on 70.
Wheatlands Opens: Allan Black (8) won the Laurent Perrier Men’s Open Stableford on Saturday with 39 points.
Richard Spence (14) was second on 37 and Kenny Jaffray (14) third on 36.
Margaret Birch (20) won the Laurent Perrier Ladies’ Open on countback with 42.
Linda Spence (18) was second and Carol Leaman (36) third on 40.
The Seat/Laurent Perrier Junior Open was won on countback by James Mckenna (22), with 37.
John de Carteret (22) was second and Harrison Jukes (23) third on 34.
Surrey victory: Jamie Ellis (12) won (on countback) the La Moye GC East Surrey Cup on Saturday with a net 69.
Bob Wickings (4) was second and was the Division I winner.
Tristan Colledge (13) was third on a net 70.
PETANQUE – Summer win: Joan Le Mercier won the ladies’ PBS Summer Melee with nine wins plus 68 after the final round was played at Les Quennevais yesterday.
Marian Allen was second with nine wins plus 63 and third was Rita Le Brocq with nine wins plus 50.
In the men’s event, four players achieved nine wins but Lyndon Lewis won with plus 69.
Matthew Pinel was second with plus 65 and Gerald Rolland third with plus 58.
ANGLING – Conger festival: Wayne Cassin won the Jack Gavey Trophy and a top-quality rod for catching the largest fish (29 lb 10 oz) at the 28th annual Shore Conger Festival.
Steven Lumb was second with a conger of 23 lb 12 oz.
Lumb won an abu 7000 reel and also scooped the pool.
EQUESTRIAN – Show Jumper of the Year event: Emma Pallot on Rosie Daze won the Junior Heritage Group Victor Ludorum class at the Show Jumper of the Year event and Helen Clackett on Just Jodi took the senior title.
