Air display faces funding shortfall
Tuesday 11th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
THE 2007 Jersey International Air Display is £20,000 in debt and organisers are worried that they could face a big overdraft this year.
The free show, which is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Island, takes place on Thursday and will cost about £230,000. The Economic Development Department contributes £100,000 towards the bill and the rest of the money comes from private sponsorship. Organiser Mike Higgins has warned that the display will be in serious trouble if not enough programmes are sold or donations received. ‘This is one of the last free air displays left in the world. We can’t charge the public and we don’t intend to, but we need to get the money from somewhere to keep it going. ‘Next year we plan to encourage the finance industry to support the charity and I hope we can work together. We are going to invite the Saudi Hawks aerobatics team over and we hope this will encourage business to the Island.’ said Mr Higgins.
