Guernsey are Jersey’s first snooker scalp in Wales

JERSEY beat Guernsey 11-7 in their third match at snooker’s Home Internationals in Prestatyn, Wales, yesterday.

There were wins for Gary Britton, who beat Adrian Holley 2-1 (62-48, 31-57, 57-28), Aaron Canavan, who beat John Skillet 3-0 (64-33, 57-26, 75-50), Ray Kilmartin in beating Jez Rowe 3-0 (81-54, 71-38, 64-16), and captain Karl Le Fevre who overcame Adam Shorto 2-1 (65-56, 35-65, 56-26).

Guernsey’s major points came from Martin Desperques, who beat Karl Softly 3-0, and Glen Le Prevost who beat Dave Snell 2-1.

Following this match Jersey gave a gutsy performance to pocket five frames against a well-established Wales side, who won with 13 points.

Canavan took the opening frame 67-27 against David Mills before losing the tie 2-1, while there were 2-1 wins for both Le Fevre (40-76, 62-51, 64-38) against Rhydian Richards and Kilmartin (48-32, 1-47, 58-50) against Emyr Humphries.

On Saturday Jersey opened their account against the favourites Republic of Ireland and lost 12-6.

Snell pinched a frame off one of Ireland’s best players Vincent Muldoon (62-10) and Softly scored a point with a 78-20 frame against John Torpey.

Britton and Kilmartin also won a frame against David Hogan (62-16) and Vincent Meaney (59-43) respectively.

Man of the match for Jersey was Chris Alexander who beat Francenk Sarsfield 2-1 (55-44, 69-31, 42-60) while Canavan had a tough match against Ireland’s top player Brendan O’Donoghue who high-breaked 105 on his way to a 3-0 win.

The following day Jersey lost 15-3 to a Pontin’s International side of European players.

Britton secured the Island’s only win 2-1 (28-65, 67-46, 67-19) against Nathan Williams while Dave Snell scooped a point for his 63-12 opening frame.

Jersey today take on England and then France.
