On top of the world – just 24 hours before
Tuesday 11th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
MOST people remember where they were when they heard that hijacked planes had plunged into the Twin Towers six years ago today.
But one Jersey couple have more reason than most to remember – they had been at the top of one of the towers only 24 hours before and were still in New York when the world’s deadliest terrorist attack was carried out. Claire and Morgan Jubb had arrived in the city on 8 September, for what was supposed to be a happy occasion. ‘It was our first visit to America and we had just found out that I was pregnant with our first child,’ said Mrs Jubb. On Sunday the couple took the Circle Line ferry past the Statue of Liberty and had their photograph taken with the Twin Towers behind them in the distance. And on Monday, just a day before the attack, they went to the Top of the World observatory, at the top of one of the towers. ‘We were up there for quite a few hours. I’m really scared of heights, yet I felt really safe up there,’ recalled Mrs Jubb. ‘Having recently discovered I was pregnant I remember thinking imagine if there was a fire in this building, that would be a lot of stairs to climb down.’
