Motocross:Shires King of Sorel
Wednesday 12th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
MORE than 120 competitors experienced the good track conditions of the JMCLCC’s two-day festival of motocross, with UK rider Paul Shires winning the main event of the weekend.
There was a three-way fight in the Deans Yamaha MX2 class in the senior championship between Shires and local aces Dale Campbell and Ryan Gregory.
This event produced some of the most spectacular racing of the weekend, although it was cut short for Campbell who, having beaten Shires twice on Saturday, had to withdraw from Sunday’s action after a bad crash in race one which left him tenth overall.
Shires’s aggressive riding earned him three wins and three second places, making him a worthy champion, while Gregory rode well over the whole weekend but was unable to match Shires’s pace and finished second.
Guernseyman Mark Cox rode strongly, pushing the leaders all the way to claim third.
The Avis Rent a Car youths’ 125 championship produced a feast of close racing to match the senior group, with Dan Moon taking the title from Chris Le Marquand in second place and James Bee finishing third.
The latter’s strong performance earned him the Chris Massey Man of the Class award.
Damian Boyer had six wins in the Bikers KTM adult open class, and Denis Le Breton’s brilliant performance on his new KTM 450cc bike earned him the Motocross Committee Man of the Meeting award.
Oliver Eden overcame two spectacular crashes to claim third place.
In the A1 Precast 85 cc big-wheel junior class, Liam Wright dominated with five top place finishes, while Brett Pearce and Adam Harris took second and third respectively.
Nadia Veloso was the first lady rider and her performance gave her the overall Ladies’ Championship of the meeting.
The Fencing Centre small-wheel 85cc junior class produced an epic battle between UK rider Jack Timms and up-and-coming Jersey ace Charlie Mills, with Timms edging it with four wins to Mills’s two.
Toby Luce was third.
Michael Veloso convincingly won the Alpha Asset Finance 65 cc junior class with six wins, but he was pushed all the way by Matthew Rayson and Adam Harris.
And in the Weld It auto class for the youngest riders, Jack Galloway won all six races and with it the class championship, while Joshua Cook and Joshua Connery were second and third respectively.
