JERSEY won the Garenne Group Seniors Championship yesterday to capture the golf inter-insular Challenge Trophy for the tenth time.
Playing at La Moye Golf Club, the Island side had the advantage over their Sarnian opposition as they took a four-point lead from Wednesday’s fourball matches into yesterday’s singles.
Tony Haire started the day’s proceedings on a good note, recording a 2 up win over John Gavet before Bart McCarthy and Geoff Ramskill both secured 6&5 wins over Mervyn Marquand and Rainer Schimek respectively.
Terry Smith lost to Ricky Allen (2 down) before Vic Bourgoise’s 6&4 win over Dave Collenette secured Jersey the silverware, taking them out of reach with 8.5 points compared to Guernsey’s 1.5.
Pat McKeary and Peter Crossland added some points for the visiting side with their 1 up wins over Micky Byrne and Gerald Binding but Jersey finished as they started with three wins.
Charlie Smith beating Lawrence Graham (2 up), Colin Attwood securing a 2&1 win over Mick King, and Jeremy Turpin a 4&3 win over Kevin Lycett to make the final score Jersey 11.5, Guernsey 3.5.
Captain of the Jersey side Clive Dobin said: ‘The standard of both Guernsey and Jersey was excellent but I think some of our seniors have had a bit more match-play experience which gave us the advantage, along with playing at home.
‘The score would tell you we walked it however, there were a few close games, But we were delighted to win.’
