Support for CI football league – but only if the price is right

JERSEY Coca-Cola Combination division I managers are all in favour of a Channel Islands football league – as long as some funding can be provided to lessen the potentially crippling costs.

Portuguese Club manager Kevin MacCarthy: ‘It’s a great idea as it takes away from playing the same faces every week.

It’s good to have new opposition, although the cost is always going to be an issue, but it’s a fantastic idea.’ Jersey Wanderers manager Peter McVey: ‘I think we need it because players on the Island get used to playing certain players, everyone stays at the same level and is not going to raise their game which is a big problem here between the two.

Ideally really would be to link up with England but obviously cost comes into it.

I’m in favour though.’ Trinity manager Joe Morley: ‘I’ve always been in favour of it as long as the finance is correct because a lot of clubs are struggling now.

That would be the only stumbling block, but it would be good to go away as you get so used to playing each other in Jersey.’ Jersey Scottish manager Pat Brennan: ‘Obviously it would be a good to play different teams but it’s just the same old carry on with finance.

If it can be financed then it will be great to play different teams each week.

We deliberately came out of the Jeremie Cup because we were going over to play about five or six games a year and it cost us about £5000.

The team enjoyed going but it was hard for us to maintain – without a sponsor or benefactor it will be tough.’ Grouville manager Ian Horswell: ‘Anything to better local football would be a good idea but there’s always going to be a huge stumbling block because of finance.

If you can get a CI league sponsor then it would be great to play against different people and to get more games than the 16 you play in the top flight in Jersey.’ St Paul’s manager Craig Culkin: ‘If it’s going to improve the standard of football and improve players then I’m all for it but obviously there are cost implications – the South-West County League hasn’t worked due to cost.’ First Tower manager Bob Kearsey: ‘It’s a good idea but obviously the main issue is going to be cost, as it always is, and if there is going to be a big sponsor to cover that.

If it kicks off then it will make a more competitive league system so why not?’ St Peter manager Jon Trigg: ‘Like most we would welcome the benefits that a CI league would bring, that being an increase in competition and a greater number of league games.

Unfortunately I suspect that the travel costs and logistics of teams travelling during the winter months could halt such a plan at source.

The fixtures would also need some really serious consideration as again this season even with one Jersey league, we have all three teams out on one Saturday and then no games for any team for three weeks.’
