Jersey topple Trojans

THE Jersey Investec men’s hockey first XI progressed to the second round of the English Hockey Association Cup yesterday following a 4-3 ‘golden goal’ extra-time victory against Trojans at Les Quennevais.

Jersey had an excellent start with two goals in the opening 15 minutes but untidiness in their play resulted in their Southampton-based opponents pulling back to level the scores on the stroke of half time.

Jersey again nudged ahead in the second half before their South Hockey League Premier Division II opponents fought back to force extra time.

With a penalty shoot-out looming with just two minutes remaining, Mike James dribbled into the D and crossing the ball Mark Dicker held his nerve to score the winning goal.

Central midfielder and team captain Bill Aston said: ‘We got the result we were looking for but unfortunately we did not play that well overall which was disappointing for our supporters.

‘In the opening 15 minutes we were superb, but we let them back into the game with some indifferent play at times.

‘We managed to get ahead again only to be pegged back for a second time, but in extra-time we scored again to finally kill them off after we squandered some guilt-edged opportunities.

‘Our determination got us through in the end, we stuck at it by working hard and never allowing our heads to drop.’ Robin Le Quesne put Jersey ahead after a fine run from Nathan Maguire.

Luke Maguire beat two defenders well to double Jersey’s advantage with a reverse stick shot.

Dicker was denied by a post before Trojans netted in the 32nd and 34 minutes to level the scores.

After Trojans missed two good chances Le Quesne scored his second from a well worked penalty corner to put Jersey 3-2 ahead.

Trojans levelled again when a rebound fell kindly to their centre forward leaving nerves jangling before Dicker settled the issue late on.
