Prison cells to be made safer
Wednesday 19th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
THE governor of La Moye prison says that money will be ‘juggled’ to ensure that prison cells are safer after two suicides occurred in less than five months.
At an inquest into the death of alleged paedophile Paul Romeril (39), who died in jail in January, Steve Guy-Gibbens admitted that limited funds meant that prison cells were not up to scratch. He had earlier confessed on Monday that below-par conditions, including the lack of appropriate support networks, could have led to the death of inmate Neil Davey (29) in September last year. Mr Guy-Gibbens said that he was frustrated by the lack of money available to him for vital resources. This had had a serious impact on the standard of care for offenders. Mr Guy-Gibbens is due to leave his post later this year after deciding to resign, citing frustration with bureaucracy in Jersey as one of the major factors.
