Scott and Crick shatter St Peter’s Wheway Cup hopes at first hurdle

Wednesday 19th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.

SECOND half goals by James Scott and Ross Crick took Jersey Scottish to a 2-0 JFA Wheway Cup preliminary round victory against St Peter at Springfield last night.

Scott, playing in an unaccustomed role in midfield, scored with a good shot from the edge of a penalty area just after half time before Crick converted a late penalty, which he needed to net twice as his first effort was ruled out because of a team-mate encroaching into the penalty area.

Scottish manager Pat Brennan said: ‘It’s wasn’t a good game, we had to shuffle our pack around quite a bit because of absentees and it took us a long while to settle down.

‘Our back four were excellent, they worked well as a unit and they were under little pressure throughout.

‘James took his goal really well, it was an excellent strike.

We had further chances but failed to take them before Ross tucked away the penalty at the second attempt after his first was ruled out for encroachment.

‘It was a definite penalty, Jack Boyle played a cracking reverse pass into Paul Aitken and he was fouled by Jack Cannon.

‘Yes, it took us time to get going and after a good chat at half time things did improve in the second half.’ St Peter manager Jon Trigg said: ‘It was an improved performance from Saturday but we lacked a cutting edge in attack.

‘We played well first half only to tire towards the end.

‘We should have had a penalty too but it wasn’t given while Scottish’s first goal came from a free kick that I didn’t think was a free kick either.

‘We’re encouraging everyone to accept decisions and respect referees and we must support the players and abide by the same rules.

‘Saying that it is very sad that a more intimidating approach towards officials appears to reap more reward.’ Scottish play either St Paul’s or Grouville in the first round on Saturday 27 October.
