Views sought on user-pays policing

THE public are to get a chance to comment on controversial plans to make event organisers pay for policing.
The Education and Home Affairs scrutiny panel is launching a review of the proposals which were shelved for further consideration last year. The shelving of Home Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard’s plans did not stop the organisers of Jersey Live having to pay around £90,000 for the cost of 33 police officers being drafted in from outside forces for the two-day festival earlier this month. The scrutiny panel which will investigate the proposals are urging the public to make their views known. In a statement announcing the review, they say: ‘The panel believes that its review will lead to a greater understanding among both the public and States Members of how the proposed charge would work and which events might be affected. It will examine the rationale behind the proposal and consider the impact it might have on the planning and organisation of events. ‘The panel will seek evidence from the Minister for Home Affairs and the organisers of events. However, it also wishes to receive comments on the proposals from the public.’
